Art production in gaming is the comprehensive and complete creation of the visual elements in a game. The art production process begins with concept and 2D art before typically proceeding to 3D art and animation. They work closely with the game’s design and development teams to ensure consistency as the game is brought to life.

The tools of the trade are changing often but currently there are a few keystones for different aspects of game art production. Photoshop is always common for 2D and concept art. Autodesk Maya and Blender are both commonly used for 3D modeling. And Substance Painter is a front-runner for any texture painting required.

This process often revolves around optimizing textures and level of detail to ensure a game runs smoothly. Optimizing textures can be done by baking higher quality textures onto lower poly models to give the impression of a far higher quality model. While level of detail is a rendering technique that simplifies textures and polygons the further away the player is from them. Both are utilized by the Magic Media team.
