Creating 3D Game Art for Remnant 2

Magic Media had the pleasure of working with Gunfire Games on the smash-hit shooter action RPG, Remnant 2. We provided numerous services for the project, including real-time VFX and 3D game art. For our part in Remnant 2, we were tasked with creating a staggering amount of 3D game art of all different kinds to bring its vibrant world to life.

3D Game Art for Weapons, Mods, and Bosses

Our collaboration with Gunfire Games began as a dream come true for our 3D artists and 3D modelers. The team at Gunfire Games sent us an ample amount of concept art to help us understand our work and much to the joy of our artists, they were given the creative freedom to elaborate on their concept art and transform it into 3D game art to represent their vision in their way.

Our collaboration on Remnant 2 lasted roughly a year and a half. During this time, we delivered 34 3D game art pieces comprised of the pieces we were originally tasked with creating, plus some additional requests. These 3D game art pieces primarily consisted of weapons, weapon mods, and some enemies. We worked on a wide variety of weapons for Remnant 2, including everything from shotguns to sniper rifles, and even crossbows and axes.

For weapon mods, we worked on what is called N’erud mods, weapon modifications that transform traditional armaments into living weapons. We also worked on Earth mods, piecemeal modifications crafted from scarp, and Pan mods, which transform regular into futuristic, crystalline weapons. Additionally, we worked on a miniboss called the Custodian’s Eye – a beholder-like robot enemy.

Delivering Our 3D Game Art

Collaborating with Gunfire Games in delivering 3D game art services was as efficient as it was smooth sailing. The team at Gunfire Games encouraged our 3D artists to experiment with their output which provided our team with a motivational boost. It was a wholly positive experience that fostered a creative environment, one we were more than happy to be involved in.

As with all of our project commitments, we worked diligently to provide the 3D game art Gunfire Games needed for Remnant 2 and to deliver them on time according to previously agreed deadlines. We were able to deliver our 3D game art on time and without complications.

3D Game Art Challenges

The biggest challenge for Magic Media in delivering 3D game art was capturing the distinct Remnant 2 art style. The game uses a variety of visual motifs, including scavenged survival tools, fleshy armaments, and futuristic energy weapons, so there was an ample amount of work for our 3D artists to sink their teeth into. We primarily used ZBrush to sculpt the organic-based 3D game art, Blender and 3ds Max for the majority of our 3D art, and Substance Painter for coloring and texturing.
