TMNT: Mutant Madness is a mobile hero battler and RPG based on the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. Developed by Kongregate’s Synapse studio in partnership with Nickelodeon, the game combines real-time combat, character collection, progression systems, PvE and PvP gameplay with the distinctive world and characters of the classic TMNT universe.
Magic Media, through Starloop Studios, supported the development of TMNT: Mutant Madness as a co-development partner, working alongside Nexxter Interactive for Kongregate. Our team contributed across visual design, VFX, user interface, and progression systems to help refine the player experience.
Challenge
TMNT: Mutant Madness needed to combine a recognizable global IP with the depth and progression expected from a modern mobile RPG.
The game featured a large roster of heroes and villains, multiple progression systems, real-time battles, and a broad range of screens and interfaces that players needed to navigate easily on mobile devices.
As development progressed, these systems needed to remain clear, engaging, and visually consistent with the wider TMNT identity.
The project therefore required additional development support that could integrate directly with the existing teams and contribute to both the presentation and usability of key gameplay systems.
Solution
Magic Media worked as part of the wider development pipeline to support several areas of the player experience.
Our team created visual progression maps designed to make character and gameplay advancement clearer and more engaging for players. We also produced new visual effects to strengthen feedback and presentation across the game, while supporting improvements to the battle UI to make important combat information easier to understand during fast-paced encounters.
The main screen was redesigned to improve the overall user experience and give players clearer access to the game’s different systems and activities.
Working within an established IP required close coordination with the wider development team, ensuring that new visual and interface elements remained consistent with the creative direction of TMNT: Mutant Madness.
Result
The co-development partnership helped refine several important elements of TMNT: Mutant Madness ahead of its wider mobile release.
Improvements to the main interface, battle UI, progression presentation, and VFX contributed to a clearer and more polished player experience while maintaining the recognizable visual identity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise.
TMNT: Mutant Madness launched globally on iOS and Android in September 2020, bringing its combination of real-time combat, hero collection, and idle progression to mobile players. The project demonstrates how focused co-development support can strengthen existing production teams, providing additional expertise across UI, VFX, and gameplay presentation without disrupting the wider development pipeline.
