Espire 1: VR Operative is a VR stealth action game developed by Digital Lode and published by Tripwire Interactive. Built around immersive movement, stealth, combat, and physical interaction, the game places players inside a remote-operated Espire Frame as they infiltrate a heavily secured facility.
Magic Media, through Starloop Studios, supported the development of Espire 1 by bringing the PC experience to PlayStation VR. The project required platform-specific optimization, adaptation of existing gameplay systems, and close coordination with an actively evolving development build.
Challenge
Bringing Espire 1 from PC VR to PlayStation VR presented a number of technical and gameplay challenges. The original game had been developed around PC VR hardware, where performance capabilities, headset specifications, and control systems differed significantly from PlayStation VR. The port therefore needed to maintain the responsive movement, interaction, stealth mechanics, and visual quality that defined the PC experience while operating within the performance requirements of the target console hardware.
An additional challenge was that development of the core game was continuing throughout the project, meaning the porting team needed to work alongside a live and constantly changing codebase.
Solution
Magic Media worked closely with the wider development team to adapt Espire 1 for PlayStation VR while keeping pace with ongoing development.
Our engineers carried out platform-specific optimization to ensure the game met Sony's technical and performance requirements.
The team also adapted and enabled gameplay modes for the target hardware, ensuring that features originally developed around the PC VR experience worked effectively within the PlayStation VR environment. Working on a live development project required close coordination between teams, with updates to the core game continually reviewed and integrated into the porting pipeline. This collaborative approach allowed platform-specific issues to be addressed throughout production rather than treated as a final-stage conversion.
Result
Magic Media successfully supported the development of the PlayStation VR version of Espire 1: VR Operative, helping adapt the game's core stealth experience for a new VR platform.
The project combined optimization, platform-specific development, and ongoing integration with an active production build, demonstrating the importance of close technical collaboration when porting complex VR titles. Espire 1 ultimately launched across a wide range of VR platforms, including PlayStation VR, Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift, Valve Index, HTC Vive, and Windows Mixed Reality.
